Podcast (BBC Desert Island Discs) Made Me Do It
In the second half of last year, I was happily engaged in the exchange of academic projects based on the above-mentioned broadcast publications. In short, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has a program for overachieved guests in their own rights. On the show, they tell the story behind their success, and they submit eight songs to play through the entire performance. As well, they pretend to be preparing to be that week’s “castaway” and to keep them company while gone: the host offers them a book choice and a luxury from at the end of the program. The title of this particular class was “Selected Topics in the Study of Immigration and Diaspora” African and Black Diaspora Studies MGDS5002A / AFRI5700A. In the project: my introduction entailed revealing my guest,Julius Sello Malema, and highlighting some of his outstanding achievements.
Then the real staff began:
Me: “Due to time constraints, our guest will talk only about his public life. So, Malema, please tell us a bit about your early years.”
Malema: He was wearing a well-cut black suit and a white shirt, and an expensive watch. Warming up the studio with a smile, he said “good evening, Nombuso and your lovely listeners. It is my pleasure to be your guest tonight.” He went on to play with his timepiece before adding that “as a township boy he had never imagined making it to the BBC, so…
